Intel Looks to Video Delivery

According to Cisco, video is expected to approach 80% of all internet traffic in the coming years. This makes it important to be able to deliver such content quickly and efficiently through the cloud.

Intel showed a new processor family to enable just such a solution, called the Xeon processor E3-1500 v5 series. These combine the power of Intel’s Xeon server processors with the graphical performance of Iris Pro graphics P580. Service providers can use the processors to run more video streams on a server or appliance.

The new processors are based on Intel’s 14nm Skylake architecture and use a new transcoding solution called QuickSync.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the new processor, Intel showed a 360° live stream of a VR jazz concert, which was taking place in New York and being streamed to Computex. The stream used hardware-assisted UltraHD video delivery on Intel’s Xeon E3v5 servers.

According to Intel, the processors can handle up to 15 real-time video streams (1920 x 1080) at 30fps.

In addition, Intel showed a new Core i7 processor family called the Extreme Edition. It is designed to address the needs of today’s ‘mega-tasking’ gamers and content creators. The firm also demonstrated its seventh-generation Core processors, known as Kaby Lake. As well as its traditional uses, future Core processors will be used in new applications such as digital signage and industrial IoT.
