We don’t regularly report on all the developments in field monitors for use on camera, but our attention was drawn to the new Atomos Shogun Inferno monitor which is claimed to be the only 1,500 cd/m² HDR recorder/monitor available for on-camera use and supporting many different cameras. The monitor is a 7.1″ unit with 1920 x 1200 format (325ppi). It has a touch-enabled IPS panel that is compatible with Sony SLog2 / SLog3, Canon CLog / CLog 2, Arri Log C, Panasonic Vlog, JVC JLog, Red LogFilm and gamuts including Sony SGamut / SGamut3 / SGamut3.cine/ Canon Cinema / BT2020 / DCI P3 / DCI P3+ Panasonic V Gamut and Arri Alexa Wide Gamut (although not complete coverage of all of them).
The unit can also show PQ content and at the show, HLG support was shown. The unit can record directly to Apple ProRes HQ in 422 with 10 bits with support for resolutions up to 2160P60. One of the big claims of Atomos is that it can support commodity memory, so standard SSDs can be used to allow long recording and ‘annihilating media costs’, to quote the rep we spoke to. There are SDI inputs and outputs and the unit can be used both for simple editing and also adding metadata live, which can save a lot of time when later editing and looking for specific clips and takes. The Inferno is selling now for $1,995.
The Shogun Flame is a similar product, with the same display, but is limited to 2160P30 recording and costs $1,495.
